Last Minute Gifts for People Living with AiArthritis Diseases

Gifts that are perfect for any budget

It’s often a challenge to find the perfect gifts for everyone on your holiday gift list. It can be even more difficult when the person you are shopping for has an Autoimmune or Autoinflammatory arthritis (AiArthritis) disease. Some people living with AiArthritis diseases struggle with everyday chores while others are homebound. All live with pain and fatigue. Finding the perfect gift for someone who may be struggling physically is not only thoughtful but can be helpful as well.

Gift cards:  Gift cards can be a real treat for people in many ways. First, a treat to a local coffee shop or nail salon can help someone treat themselves to an activity they might pass on. Gift cards also allow people to get exactly what they want for themselves, instead of something they may need to return. Gift cards can help someone who may be on disability treat themselves to something special (nail salon, coffee shop, restaurant), or help them get something they might need (adaptable equipment for bathroom or kitchen items). Some people may see gift cards as impersonal, but for many, it’s the perfect gift.

Meals/Food Delivery service: Cooking can challenge everyone regardless of their physical ability level. Some services deliver ingredients to make a full meal while others provide pre-cooked options. Cooking can be difficult for those living with AiArthritis diseases due to fine motor skills like cutting, and/or decreased energy levels. Taking the daily chore of cooking off of someone’s plate would be a treat for many!

Adaptive equipment for fine motor skills:  Fine motor skills refer to the small muscles in our hands and wrists. Many people living with arthritis struggle significantly with fine motor tasks. Adaptive equipment can make a big difference in levels of independence. Some examples of fine motor adaptive equipment include a Reacher/grabber, jar/bottle openers, and pop sockets or phone holders.  Another great tool is picking up a “hip kit, “ a collection of medical equipment that can be helpful with dressing and showering. These items can help a person become more independent with daily living skills.

Compression gloves:  This year, AiArthritis teamed up with Grace and Able to present the Chili Red Compression Gloves.  Arthritis affects millions worldwide, causing pain and limitations in daily activities. While there are over 200 forms of arthritis, many of those include auto-inflammatory and autoimmune arthritis - the diseases that AiArthritis covers. With Chili Red Compression Gloves, we offer a stylish and effective solution to reduce joint pain and swelling.  Get yours here:  https://bit.ly/3GO4eWe

Books:  Gift cards to book retailers are a great gift. The giftee can decide between an ebook, hardback, or audio version of their favorite author’s work. AiArthritis recommends Keeping it Real with Arthritis: Stories from Around the World by Effie Koliopoulos. In this book, Effie collected stories from patients living with various forms of arthritis (many from our own AiArthritis community). It is an uplifting and inspiring book to give anyone living with an AiArthritis Disease.  Get a copy today: https://bit.ly/3GO42pY

Online Streaming Service: There are a plethora of streaming services to choose from. If you have a movie lover or someone who loves classic comedies on your shopping list, there are a variety of affordable choices in packages ranging from 1 month to 12 months.  Several streaming services offer options for “in-theater” movies. This is a fantastic feature for people with weakened immune systems who prefer to avoid crowded theaters.

Hot and cold devices:  Heating pads come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can pinpoint specific areas of the body. Some may require electricity to work, while others can be heated in a microwave or hot water. Electric blankets are also great gift options. Reciprocally, ice packs are an excellent way to relieve pain. Many companies that focus on the Arthritis community manufacture gloves and boots that alternate between hot and cold therapy.

Massagers: Massagers can provide relief to many living with chronic pain. Various massage devices can pinpoint trigger areas and provide relief. There are massagers made specifically for hands, feet, and backs that can help people living with AiArthritis Diseases find comfort and potential pain relief.

Adaptable Clothing:
Buttons, zippers, and snaps can be quite a difficult task for people with AiArthritis diseases to manage. Many popular store brands now offer “Adaptable clothing” to help dressing go a bit more smoothly. Pajamas and loungewear that are free of clasps are also a great idea.

Finally, the most affordable item you can gift someone living with an AiArthritis Disease is your time. A phone call, video chat, or a planned visit can lift the spirits of someone living with chronic illness. Symptoms of AiArthritis cause many people to bow out of social events due to pain and fatigue. This often leads to isolation and depression. Let them know you care by sharing your time. It can make someone’s day knowing they are important to you.

Support is necessary for persons living with AiArthritis diseases, but also it's important to consider the needs of those in our support network (family, significant others, friends) whose perspectives, concerns, and feelings also need to be considered. So AiArthritis is starting a tool to help support networks improve communication - and we invite YOU to help us continue building it!
