Let's Talk: COVID, Vaccinations, and

Shared-Decision Making

With so much information, differing perspectives, and ever evolving news, patients need a safe place to learn and connect. This project positions our organization, led by persons living with AiArthritis diseases, to be the information and education liaison.

Challenge

Vaccinations are underway and some of these patients are next in line. They are flocking to online communities looking for advice. We can be their information liaison. Additionally, most are not equipped with education and communication strategies to feel comfortable speaking with their doctors. Our organization can provide the education and peer-to-peer training so they can have an equal voice in the conversation, as this issue will continue as more questions about vaccination efficacy and COVID-19 reinfection emerges. As a result of this work, patients will make more informed choices about disease management during COVID-19 and will have the confidence to participate in a shared-decision making process as we continue to navigate through this unprecedented time.

Solutions

  1. Position ourselves as information liaisons. As persons living with AiArthritis diseases ourselves, we are active in online communities. We see the misinformation and we witness the debates (along with sharing of misinformation). We we help any online group leader who needs to connect members with current and correct resources.
  2. Education. Using a variety of platforms (i.e., AiArthritis Voices 360 Talk Show, social media, webinars) we will help people living with AiArthritis diseases learn more about COVID-19, vaccines, and associated treatments so they are informed to decide the best course of action for their individual needs. Downloadable resources will be developed in association with these activities.
  3. Develop and Teach Shared-Decision Making/Benefits – Risks Tool and patient-doctor communication improvement.
  4. Health Equity Consideration. We are teaming with Looms4Lupus for assistance with Spanish resources, including community outreach, webinars, and education materials.
